ABOUT DOMAIN NAMES

Domain names are the addresses you use when navigating the internet or sending emails

apple, business, computer

What are the rules? Protecting the integrity of your .UK Support with our Welsh domains Register a domain name ending in .uk
They work a little like phone numbers, enabling computers using the internet to find specific locations (such as a website or an email inbox). A domain name can be used in the place of a string of numbers called an Internet Protocol address – commonly known as an IP address. In a web address, the domain name is the words that come after www., and in an email address it comes after the @ symbol.

Just as in a telephone directory, there needs to be a system in place to make sure each address connects to the place it should. This is where the Domain Name System (DNS) comes in, by putting in place a set of rules to ensure each domain name is unique.

What are the rules?

When you register a domain name, you enter into two separate contracts: one with Nominet UK and the other with your registrar.

YOUR CONTRACT WITH NOMINET UK
Our Terms and Conditions & Rules of Registration are binding – so make sure you read them through carefully and understand them before registering. Registration entitles you to be a domain name holder, i.e. to use a domain name for an agreed time period. You would not, however, become the owner of the domain name. Which means, if you don’t renew your registration when the agreed time period comes to an end, the name becomes available for other applicants to use.

YOUR CONTRACT WITH THE REGISTRAR
We don’t have any part in contracts you make with your registrar. So it’s really important to make sure you understand your rights and obligations under this contract – particularly what would happen if commercial dealings between you and the registrar break down. Find information and advice about choosing a registrar.

Make sure your contract says that the domain name is registered in your name, unless agreed otherwise.

THE REGISTRAR’S CONTRACT WITH NOMINET
We require all registrars to follow our Registrar Agreement. This sets out how we expect them to behave in terms of how they use our registration systems, their commitments to domain holders (registrants) and their responsibility to maintain data and follow our payment terms.

If you have a complaint or any concerns you would like to raise about a registrar who may have broken the Registrar Agreement, please follow our complaints procedure.

Protecting the integrity of your .UK

We strive to make .UK a safe place to be. A key part of this is ensuring all the information we hold for the registrant of a domain name is true and up to date. And we’re not alone. Registries around the world are increasingly focusing on their ability to provide accurate registrant data so they can stop people using domain names fraudulently.

Having the right registration data is so important to us that, if you want to register a .UK domain, it’s a requirement of your contract to supply us with complete and accurate data.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
If you are listed as the registrant, we’ll consider you legally responsible for the domain name. This means it’s essential that we have the correct contact details for you, so we can get in touch with you if there’s ever a problem with your domain name. This includes making sure we have an up to date email address for you, as this is the main way we contact registrants.

HOW WE CHECK YOUR DATA
To make sure the information we hold is true and up to date, we will attempt to match all registrant name and address details with third party data sources when you register, or when you change your data. We do this by checking the information you supply us with in your application against a number of different databases, including:

The Electoral Register: we use this to check UK name information for individual applicants.
Companies House data and UK business records: we use these files to check that applications made under trade names correspond with registered companies.
Royal Mail Postcode Address file: we use this to validate all UK addresses. Because addresses in this database are often in a different format to how they appear on our register, we carry out a matching exercise to establish how close an address is to the ‘perfect address’. This is based on a confidence level. It’s also important to note that the registrant’s name and address don’t need to be linked. For instance, we understand that registrants may give different addresses as points of contact to their home address, such as a solicitor or accountant. It’s essential to make sure the registrant can be contacted through this address.
In each case, we look for a valid individual, business and address we can identify as matching the information we hold. Information for applicants from overseas is also checked against equivalent address sources, and where possible against the business registry in the host country.

HOW YOU’LL KNOW IF WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO VALIDATE YOUR DATA
You can use the WHOIS tool to check if we’ve been able to match your information against the data sources listed above. If your data has been validated, you’ll see the following status:

Nominet was able to match the registrant’s name and address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY

If we haven’t been able to validate the name and/or address, you’ll receive the following reply:

Nominet was not able to match the registrant’s name and address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY

If an Accredited Channel Partner validates the registrant’s data, WHOIS will show this message:

The Registrar is responsible for having checked these contact details

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO VALIDATE YOUR DATA?
If we can’t match your data, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s incorrect. Because our domain register includes over 10 million names, we have to use an automated validation system which is not always 100% accurate.

In some cases, it could be that although you’ve submitted the right details, they aren’t listed on the public sources we use to check them. For example, if you’re not currently listed on the electoral roll, or your organisation has only recently been registered with Companies House.

If this happens, we can try to match the data manually by asking applicants to submit appropriate documents. If we do get in touch with you about validating your details, it’s important that you act on this as soon as you can – if your details aren’t verified your domain name could be suspended.

Depending on whether we’ve been unable to validate your name and/or address, we accept any example of the following:

Valid driving licence
Valid passport
Valid National ID card (for non-UK citizens)
National Insurance card (for UK citizens)
Utility bill from the last three months
Bank statement from the last three months
HMRC tax notification from the last three months
Official company letterhead
Company stamp
In some cases, we can’t match data because a domain may have been registered to someone who didn’t give their full name, or is under a trading name that doesn’t correspond with a registered company. In these cases, we’ll ask registrants to update or complete their personal information.

If your details are out of date or incorrect, you can update them through your Online Services account.

Support with our Welsh domains

As well as .UK, we run the registry for .cymru and .wales domain names. These spaces provide the perfect opportunity for you to express your Welsh identity – and join Wales’ growing online community.

Find out more about the new domain names for Wales, including how to register your .cymru and .wales domain names at ourhomeonline.wales. If you’re registering a .cymru or .wales domain name, you can read up on your rights and responsibilities on the ICANN website.

The policies and disputes process for our Welsh domains are slightly different to our .UK ones. Follow the links below to learn more.

OUR POLICIES
Before registering your .cymru or .wales domain name, read through these policies to make sure you can get the name you want – and avoid future disputes.
Acceptable use and anti-abuse
International domain names policy & tables
WHOIS Acceptable Use Policy
.cymru and .wales Policy Statement
SETTLING A DISPUTE OVER .CYMRU AND .WALES GTLDS – YOUR RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
You can resolve disputes over the registration of .cymru and .wales domain names in one of two standardised dispute resolution procedures:

The Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), which is incorporated into your contract with your registrar. If a complaint is successful, the complainant may have the domain name cancelled or transferred into their name.
The Uniform Rapid Suspension System (URS). This is very similar to the UDRP, but is intended to bring about a much quicker resolution. Successful complainants will only be able to suspend a domain name.
Neither of these procedures prevents someone taking a domain name dispute to court – which they have the right to do. Where we can, we will try to assist in effecting orders from courts of competent jurisdiction regarding the registration of .cymru and .wales domain names.

How To Build A Website 2018 | You Don’t Have To Be A Tech Geek

If you’re wondering about how to build a website (even for free), then this article will be helpful for you.
Have no idea where to start?  That’s perfectly normal, to be honest.
You’re not alone as for most people, building a website online is still a bit of a mystery.
For most people (including us a few years ago), creating a website is something that only IT geeks are capable of doing.
These coders lock themselves in basements, have no friends, and wear thick glasses. Right?
Right??
Well, that was the old school stereotype that most people had for coders (including us a few years ago when we struggled to get started – we confess!)
I’m not sure if it’s because of the media, movies, whatever. But that’s definitely not how a lot of websites are actually built nowadays, and that’s definitely not how coders behave!
You don’t need to be an IT geek to learn how to build a website from scratch today.
You don’t even need to know code (a bit will help, but not a necessity and it won’t hold you back), you don’t need to manage hosts / servers, and you don’t need to have a lot of money.
Here is a quick snapshot of some of the website builders nowadays that can help you build your website – without having to learn how to code or breaking your bank account.

  3. Weebly
  4. Jimdo
If you’re not familiar with them, keep reading and we’ll show you how to you can create a website in less than a day, and a list of basic items you need to get started.
And don’t worry, the surprising part is that entire process won’t cost you very much.

HOW A LOT OF WEBSITES ARE BUILT NOWADAYS

Technology has advanced tremendously over the past few years. The internet has grown faster than ever before.
Facebook has taken over, Google is king, and normal folks like yourself can build your own website for free.
More and more people are creating websites online as a way to express themselves and get in touch with others. Businesses cannot afford not to have websites as a way of reaching more potential customers.
If you want to build a business, or if you already have a business but haven’t built your website yet, you’re falling further and further behind.
But is building websites easy?  What is a good website builder? What do you need to get started? How much does it cost to build a website?
In the past? Very challenging.
Today? Not challenging or super expensive at all.
Think about it. Facebook made it easy for you to connect with hundreds, if not thousands of people. Smartphones make it easy for you to surf the web on a tiny device.
It’s not that hard to believe that building websites can also be easy, right?
There are a lot of website creators that have emerged over the past few years that enable you to build websites without knowing how to code.
They programmed the website building software so now you literally just have to use your mouse and drag a slideshow, a block of text, images, videos, into the website. You can then insert your own text, upload your own pictures, insert your own videos (such as YouTube), and click publish. That’s it.

I know it sounds ridiculously easy.
After all, we’ve been taught that if something is too good to be true, it’s probably not, right?
Well, that’s a good rule of thumb, but not always the case.
In terms of learning how to build a website from scratch, this is definitely not the case.
For sure you will have to invest time into creating your own content and setting things up. But the days when only super tech geniuses can make websites are long gone.

HOW TO BUILD A WEBSITE: YOUR STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Just to show you how easy it is to make a website I have listed the steps below:
  1. Choose a website builder – you’ll want an
  2. Sign up for a free trial (or jump straight into a premium account!)
  3. Think about & choose your domain name (aka your website address)
  4. Choose a professional, ready-made template to customize
  5. Customize your website design by dragging and dropping text & media
  6. Preview & test your site to make sure it looks & works the way you want it to
  7. Publish your site & share it with the world!

Follow the steps above and you’ll be online in no time at all!

CHECKLIST: WHAT YOU NEED TO BUILD A WEBSITE

Before we dive into what drag & drop website builders are all about, I know you’re just itching to know what exactly you need to make a website!
No – you don’t need to be good at coding, or math, or coming up with an exotic formula to send a rocket ship into space (though that would definitely help further science!)
Here are the 9 things you need to make a website:
  1. Domain name
  2. Business email address
  3. Website building software
  4. Website hosting
  5. Website template design
  6. Logo
  7. Highly quality images
  8. Image editor
  9. Google Analytics

Keep in mind that these are just the basic items you need to create a website, and you can expand this list as you become more comfortable with the process.
It’s not that intimidating, right?
If you’re still a bit unsure whether you can do it, especially if you feel that you’re not the creative type (such as designing a logo, picking good pictures, etc), we have a dedicated, comprehensive “What You Need To Build A Website” guide that covers all of the checklist items above in detail.
The bottom line is – don’t let these thing intimidate you. Remember, technology nowadays makes it easier for you to build a website.

ARE ALL WEBSITE BUILDERS GOOD & EASY TO USE?

All website builders are built differently – each has its own pros and cons. Some are easier, some are more challenging.
I think the general guideline is that the more sophisticated and powerful the builder is, the higher the learning curve. That makes sense, right?
So for instance, WordPress is a very powerful website builder. It is flexible, advanced, and can almost be programmed to do almost anything you want as a website.
However, the learning curve to become proficient with using WordPress is rather steep. You will most likely have to invest quite a bit of time to learn how to use it well, and perhaps you will have to pay some freelancer or WordPress expert to help you set up your website.
Then there are WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), drag and drop website builders. These are the ones that do not need you to know any code to get a website up and running in a little amount of time.
(The following promo video is from Squarespace – Click here to see Squarespace)

These builders are ideal for people who don’t have the time to learn code (life is busy, right?) or don’t have the budget to hire someone to help build a website.
It’s great for people who enjoy DIY (Do-It-Yourself).

WHAT ABOUT WEBSITE DESIGN AND TEMPLATES?  MY SITE HAS TO LOOK GOOD!

Website builders nowadays give you a really good selection of design templates to choose from.
Let’s face it, the majority of us don’t know how to design well, let alone coding up our own web design!
So what do website builders do?  They create design templates so you can use them for your website, allowing your site to look good.
Think about them as “clothes” for your website.  If you don’t like one set of clothes, just change to another one to give your website a completely different feel.

Almost all website builders give you these templates for free, and hands down, using these design templates will give your website the biggest visual impact in the least amount of time.
You don’t need to touch any codes whatsoever!
In fact, if you are just starting a new business, we HIGHLY recommend that you don’t bother with hiring a website designer – for good reasons (see our arguments here).
Drag & drop website builders (see our recommendations below) give you really good looking design templates to give you a head start already. There are more important things to focus on while your business is still young than hiring a professional (and potentially expensive) designer.

POPULAR DRAG & DROP WEBSITE BUILDERS

If you don’t want to learn how to code, or if you don’t have a large budget to hire freelancers to help you build a website from scratch, there are a few good website builders that you may want to test out to see if they can help you out.  You just might enjoy using them, too!
Here are a few website builders that we recommend to help you build a website:
All of them have their own pros and cons, and some of them are better at certain things.
When we started making websites ourselves, we researched for days as it was hard to figure out which one best fit our needs.
There was so much information out there that it overloaded us, and pretty much paralyzed us in terms of choosing which website builder to use.
So we decided to test a lot of them. After investing hundreds of hours in using many different website builders ourselves (gosh those days were painful!), we’ve compiled a few different guides / resources so to help make your research (and life) a bit easier:
At the end of the day, there really isn’t a “one website builder fits all” type of solution.
We recommend that you narrow down your search to 2 or 3 website builders, and just invest a day to trying them out. It’s almost like shopping for a car (except MUCH cheaper). It makes a lot of sense to test drive a few of them just to see if they work out for you.
All of the website builders that we recommend are free to sign up, or at least they have a free trial period where you can give it a test drive.

WHAT ABOUT E-COMMERCE WEBSITE BUILDERS?

If you are thinking about building an online store, there are e-commerce website builders for you as well!
The best of the bunch that we recommend is Shopify if you need a very comprehensive e-commerce solution.
Their themes are great, and they have a very powerful App Store to add more powerful tools to your store.
Shopify is great if you have many products that you want to see online, or if you already have a physical store and you just want to start selling products online.
They have a Point of Sale system where you can take advantage of using iPads to run your physical store while having all the inventory, sales records, fully integrated with your online store. If you use Shopify, there is no need to separate both your online and offline store anymore.
If you don’t need too many advanced tools and only have a handful of products to sell, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly and Jimdo are also excellent candidates to consider. These are great e-commerce solutions if you are selling unique, boutique products, photographs, art, or just anything that are not mass produced.

WHAT ABOUT DOMAIN NAMES, HOSTING, SECURITY EMAILS?

One of the best things about these growing website builders is that they take care of a lot of your concerns so you can focus on just learning how to build a website, creating content and growing your website.
They provide all the hosting services for you so you don’t have to pay for it separately.
They also take care of all the security upgrades for the hosts so you don’t have to bother with all this techie stuff. They ensure that your website is always up and running, and doesn’t get hacked.

As for domain names, you can either purchase your own custom domain name through the website builder, or you can purchase it on your own through registrars such as GoDaddy or NameCheap.
Some website builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Jimdo and Webs will give you a free custom domain name if you sign up to their premium plans.
Keeping your own domain name requires you to pay an annual fee and the yearly investment is roughly around $12 for most people. So signing up to their premium plans will save you the domain name fee, which will effectively lower your yearly investment in the website builder if you sign up to their premium plans.
Just bear in mind that when you purchase a domain name from a website builder or through separate registrars, you own the domain name and can take it to wherever you want.
This is a very common question we get (and certainly one of our own question when we first started as well!) so hope this clarifies things a bit for you.
Beginners Guide to Domain Names – learn how domain name works and what some issues you should be aware of that’s not commonly discussed.

A lot of you also wonder about how to get your own custom email address. Not all the website builders provide email services built into their platform.
If you see our comparison chart, you’ll see that Jimdo, GoDaddy and IM Creator provide email services if you subscribe to their premium plans.
If you decide to use the other website builders what don’t offer email services – fear not.  Google’s G Suite (using the friendly Gmail user interface) can also help you create your own email address for a few dollars a month.
In fact, Wix, Squarespace and Weebly all partnered up with Google to offer you this customized email addresses. Google’s G Suite email service is integrated with these website builders so setup is straightforward.

CONCLUSION – HOW TO BUILD A WEBSITE

Hopefully through this post, we’ve shown you that you don’t necessarily need to know how to code or become a tech guru in order to learn how to create a website.
Those “old school” barriers are now gone.  We certainly weren’t tech savvy when we first started out, so you don’t have to be either.
There are plenty of drag and drop website builders available in the market that literally allow you to drag content into a website, and publish it without touching any codes.
The learning curve of using these website builders is not too steep, but you do have to invest a day or so to test them out. Not a bad investment if you are serious about building and growing your own presence online for years to come!
Once you become comfortable with these builders, it doesn’t hurt to pick up some very basic coding knowledge so you can modify your website if you want. It’s not a must, but just something to consider if you want to have a bit more flexibility in terms of styling of your website.
Again, here are a few helpful links to get you started in comparing which website builder can help you get your website online!
